Day 216 (05 Aug 2023) - Bilbao, Spain
DAY 216 (05 AUG 2023) – I left Porto, Portugal for an 8 hour (680 km) ride to Bilbao, Spain. It was a smooth journey on the highway, surrounded by beautiful open landscape with rugged hills.
Bilbao is an industrial port city in Northern Spain, surrounded by green mountains. The city is situated on the banks of the Nervion River that flows into the Bay of Biscay. It is famous for its iconic Guggenheim Museum, which is renowned for its architecture and contemporary art collection.
In the evening, I explored the city together with my hostel mate, John. Since it was raining, and there were no buses, we had to take a taxi to the city, which was about 8 km from the hostel. John refused when I offered to pay the taxi fare!
He also treated me to some delicious food for dinner. From our conversations, I got to know that John was from Ireland.
He is a civil engineer and has a daughter. I was surprised to hear that he had lost his travel backpack upon arrival at the airport! I thank him for his generosity and hope he will get back his backpack soon.
