Day 212 - A Day in Monaco: Exploring the Second Smallest & One of the Wealthiest Countries on Earth

Updated: Aug 26, 2023

Day 212 (01 Aug 2023) - Monaco City, Monaco

DAY 212 (01 AUG 2023) – In the morning, I visited the country of Monaco, which was just a 30-minute ride from Nice, France.

Monaco is an independent and sovereign country located on the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, between France and Italy, just 16 kilometres away from its border. It is the second smallest country in the world, after the Vatican City.

It is a beautiful city by the sea with many expensive hillside residences.

Monaco is a popular tourist destination because of its climate and casino. As such, the country relies heavily on the tourism industry to generate revenue. Monaco is also historically an international yachting hub and is famous for its yearly yacht shows. I saw so many expensive yachts and boats at the side of the bay and at sea.

Many buildings and homes are painted in shades of yellow and orange, including the roofs. Parking was a bit difficult, even for motorbikes. Initially, I wanted to stay one night in Monaco instead of Nice, France, but changed my mind after checking out the hotel prices!

Monaco is home to about 40,000 people, and one in three are millionaires. It is one of the wealthiest countries in the world since its residents do not pay personal income tax or capital gains taxes. Any other form of tax collected are very little compared to other countries.

After a brief visit, I left Monaco for a 5 hour ride to Frontignan, France. On the way, my Google Map stopped working when the connection suddenly changed from 4G to 3G. I managed to get help from a passer by who helped to reactivate my Google Map using his 4G Hotspot. His name was Salim and he was from Morocco. I am very thankful for his kind help in my hour of need.
