Day 194 - Turf Roofs: Sights of Norwegian Tradition On A 7-Hour Ride to Oslo, The Capital of Norway

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

Day 194 (14 July 2023) - Trondheim to Oslo, Norway

DAY 194 (14 JULY 2023) – In the morning, I left for a 7 hour journey (530 km) from Trondheim to Oslo, the capital city of Norway. It rained slightly in Trondheim, but otherwise it was a smooth ride all the way.

It was nice ride along the countryside, surrounded by so much greenery.

I even came across several homes with grass growing on the roof! Also known as sod roof/turf roof, Scandinavians have been traditionally growing sod roofs for hundreds of years. They look like hobbit homes with some growing wildflowers, trees or just plain grass on the roof.

These grass roofs have practical reasons as they support biodiversity by providing a place for plants to grow, birds to nest and insects to breed. The plants also help insulate the house by keeping the home warm during winter and cool during summer.

About 150 km to Oslo, the double-laned highway had many tolls for various vehicle types but it was free-of-charge for motorbikes. The maximum speed on a normal road was 100 km per hour.

I stayed at the Anker Hostel in the city and had some middle eastern food for dinner at an Istanbul restaurant.
