Day 189 (09 July 2023) - Oulu, Finland to Kiruna, Sweden
DAY 189 (09 JULY 2023) – I had a hearty breakfast at the hotel with the friendly group of Italian bikers I met yesterday. They were headed to Helsinki, Finland. I then left for an 8 hour (130 km) journey from Oulu, Finland to Kiruna, Sweden.
For the first time in my life, I saw reindeers in the forest along the highway! Some were trying to cross the road, while there were a few walking on the highway itself – one had a bell on it and was staring straight at me! I wonder whose reindeer it was! While they didn’t seem harmful, I made sure to keep a distance and rode my motorbike carefully throughout the journey.
I crossed the border freely since there was no immigration or customs checking. However, I did see many cctv cameras in place so I was sure the authorities were monitoring the borders remotely.
I managed to exchange currency to the Swedish Korona (RM1.00 = 2.31 SEK). I stayed the night at a hotel in Kiruna, which is Sweden’s northernmost city, built on top of an iron mine.
