Day 182 - Lost in the Big City, Found in a Small Town: A 6 Hour Ride from Moscow to Vishny Volochyok

Updated: Oct 1, 2023

Day 182 (02 July 2023) - Moscow to Vyshny Volochyok, Russia

DAY 182 (02 JULY 2023) – In the morning, I left Moscow for a 4 hour ride (330 km) to Vishny Volochyok.

It took me 40 minutes to get out of the city due to inaccurate navigation! A few Russian friends told me that this problem only occured within Moscow! I finally managed to find my way to the highway by asking people for directions.

This was the first time I took a tolled highway in Russia, and ended up paying a toll fee of R 1,450 (RM 76)! The highway was just like the PLUS Highway back home and the journey was smooth.

The maximum speed limit was between 110-130 km per hour.

I arrived at my hotel in Vishny Volochyok after a 6 hour journey. I took a walk around the area near my hotel and came across some unique plants outside a house. As I was admiring the beautiful plants, two passers by approached me and told me not to touch them as they were poisonous!

Apparently, this plant is called Cow Parsnip, or Giant Hogweed Plant. Its scientific name is 'Heracleum' and it contains phototoxic chemicals that are activated by sunlight and can cause blistering itchy rash if the sap gets on the skin!

Later, the hotel administrator introduced me to her son, Mark (23) who works at an auto parts shop. In the evening, Mark offered to take me sight-seeing around the town on his classic Ford car.

Among the places we visited was a beautiful serene lakeside. Today, for the first time, I’ve experienced only 1 hour 20 minutes of darkness, before it was daylight again!
