Day 177 - Exploring Cultural Harmony: Visiting a Mosque in Historically & Culturally Rich Kazan

Updated: Oct 1, 2023

Day 177 (27 June 2023) - Kazan, Russia

DAY 177 (27 JUNE 2023) (continued) – Just right next to the church within the Kazan Kremlin fortress, is the beautiful Kul Sharif Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Europe.

This mosque was built in place of the old mosque that was built and later destroyed back in the 16th century. It began construction in the 90s and opened its doors in 2005. It was named after the legendary Imam, Kul Sharif who lived in the 16th century, retaining the same name as back then. It was rebuilt next to the historical Annunciation Cathedral as a symbol of co-existence, peace and tolerance between the 2 religions in the same land.

I got an opportunity to step inside the huge mosque that was bustling with worshippers as well as visitors. I climb the stairs up to the balcony and got a good view of the beautiful interior architecture, which was equally stunning as the exterior.

Kazan is truly one of the most uniquely beautiful cities I’ve visited so far. The efforts taken to preserve these historical architectural structures are applaudable!
