Day 131 - Discovering 'Malaya' in Nagasaki: Delighting in Malaysian Cuisine in Japan

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Day 131 (12 May 2023) - Nagasaki, Japan

DAY 131 (12 MAY 2023) – In the evening, I checked in to my hotel where I met Adam, a Malaysian student who works part-time at the hotel café. He hails from Penang and he is studying at a university in Nagasaki.

Adam introduced me to a Malaysian restaurant called ‘Malaya’, just 300 meters from my hotel. The restaurant is owned by Mr Lock Hon Chiow from Johor. He and his Japanese wife have 2 kids and he has been in Japan for about 30 years now.

The ambience of the restaurant is very Malaysian. Mr Lock hangs the portraits of the Sultan of Johor and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the walls of the restaurant. Among the prominent people who have visited his restaurant is Tun Mahathir. In fact, Tun has been to the restaurant twice as PM! His restaurant is ‘halal’ certified and features all our favourite Malaysian dishes.

I ordered rice and chicken curry, but Mr Lock offered me a ‘roti canai’ as well as a treat to a fellow Malaysian.

The food was really good – in fact the chicken curry is just as tasty as my wife’s dish! We had a friendly chat and conversed with each other in both Bahasa Malaysia and English! Before leaving, he refused to accept my payment. Mr Lock gave me a dinner treat for my motorbike world tour!

Always nice to see a fellow Malaysian anywhere I go. If you ever come to Nagasaki, you must visit 'Malaya' restaurant for a great Malaysian cuisine! Wishing Mr Lock success always!
