Day 124 - Thrilling Speed and Seamless Travel: Experiencing Japan's Bullet Train for the First Time

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Day 124 (05 May 2023) - Satsumasendai, Japan

DAY 124 (05 MAY 2023) – I wanted to experience riding on one of Japan’s bullet trains, locally referred to as ‘Shinkansen’. So, I bought a 2 way ticket at a price of 3640 yen (RM 120.40) from Satsumasendai station to Kagoshima City (A one way ticket was 1820 yen). The station was clean and the trains arrived on time.

I sat at a non-reserved seat. The 46 km journey would have taken an hour by car, but I reached my destination in just 12 minutes by train! I spent a few hours roaming around Kagoshima City before heading back.

Fun fact : In 1964, Japan introduced the world to the concept of new high-speed railways, which has continued to evolve over the years, pushing the boundaries of speed, capacity and safety. Most of the bullet trains in Japan operate at a maximum speed of between 300 kph (186 mph) to 320 kph (200 mph). The long nose at the end of the trains was designed to reduce sonic booms created when trains enter tunnels at high speed.
