Day 113 - Cruising Across the Sea: A 4-Hour Ferry Journey from Aomori to Hakodate, Hokkaido Island

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Day 113 (24 Apr 2023) - Aomori to Hakodate, Japan

DAY 113 (24 APR 2023) – My next destination was Hokkaido Island, which is Japan’s second largest island. So, I headed to the Aomori ferry terminal about 3km from my hotel. However, when I arrived at 10 am, the ferry had already left! I then went to another ferry terminal nearby, but they had suspended ferry operations due to high winds.

Luckily, I found another ferry service called ‘Ocean Road’ and boarded the ferry at 2.20 pm to Hakodate. It cost 3620 yen (RM 120) for motorbike transportation and 2860 yen (RM 95) for passengers. It was interesting to see freight trucks boarding this huge ferry. There were strong winds blowing throughout the 4 hour journey.

I arrived at at Hakodate by 7 pm and headed straight to my accommodation called ‘Family Lodge Hatagoya Hokadate’. The gracious lodge owner greeted me and prepared a parking lot in front of the lodge entrance.

I had a delicious meal for dinner at a famous restaurant in Hakodate called ‘Ootoya’, about 2km from the lodge. I am really loving Japanese food!

At 9 pm, I rode my bike to Mount Hakodate about 20 minutes (7 km) from the lodge. I got a beautiful night view of Hakodate City all lit up! However, it was too cold to stick around for too long!
