Day 029 -Exploring the Historical Ai Pelo Prison: A Remnant of Portuguese Colonial Era in Dili

DAY 029 (30 JAN 2023) - I got a chance to visit the Ai Pelo Prison, which is about 40 mins from Dili. This underground Portuguese colonial prison was built in 1889. It was deactivated in 1939 and is now a ruin that has become a tourist attraction.


Timor-Leste, or East Timor came under Portuguese influence in the sixteenth century, and remained a Portuguese colony until 1975. It was then under Indonesian sovereignty from 1976 to 1999, and achieved its formal independence in 2002.
