Day 025 (26 Jan 2023) - Riding 2 hours from Ende to Kelimutu National Park!
DAY 025 (26 JAN 2023) – Stayed overnight at Ende. Early morning, I left for a 2 hour bike ride to Kelimutu National Park - about 80 km from Ende town.
My new Indonesian biker friends joined me on this trip, namely Sunyoto and his wife Yenni, Mad Eka and his wife Yati, and Gunawan. The mountainous routes were narrow, curvy and had very sharp bends - surrounded by a nothing but thick forest.
Upon arrival, I climbed about 280 steps to the viewpoint. The temperature at the top was 21 ⁰C. I got to see the exceptional Mount Kelimutu and the 3 coloured crater lakes this place is famous for.
The lakes were turquoise blue and green, surrounded by steep cliffs. These volcanic lakes regularly change colour – due to the underlying gas and elements from volcanic activities. They are definitely not meant for swimming as the sulfuric water is toxic. The view up here was simply stunning!
