Day 023 - Journey into the Ancient: Exploring a Megalithic Traditional Village in Bajawa

Updated: May 28, 2023

Day 023 (24 Jan 2023) - Visiting a megalithic traditionl village - Kampung Adat Bena, Bajawa!

DAY 023 (24 JAN 2023) – Later, Jeffery and I visited ‘Kampung Adat Bena', which was 20 km away, from Bajawa town. This Ngada village at the foot of a hill, is a famous attraction at Bajawa.

This village is just uniquely captivating! It has megalithic stone structures, traditional houses with triangular-shaped roof and 2 umbrella-shaped ancestral shrines in the center of the village – all these against the backdrop of Mount Inerie!

It is believed that historically and culturally, this unique place and its people go back all the way to 1, 200 years ago!

With the help of my travel guide, I communicated with some friendly locals who were visibly busy weaving cloth. These hand-crafted weavings are then sold in souvenir stalls in the village itself.

At present, there are 45 houses with a few families from 9 different clans living here, and majority of them are Catholics. There is a Virgin Mary shrine on a small hill at the end of the village. The scenery from here is simply stunning!
